As long as no one was harassed or forced to convert their religion, there is nothing wrong happening here. By this logic, even Ambedkar, who inspired thousands of Dalits to convert to Buddhism was a criminal, and so are all the sanghi organisations who conduct 'Ghar Wapsi' events to convert people into Hinduism(although in the latter, quite often it is actually forced, which would make it criminal).

 Here in Australia we've recently had a [Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse](http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-02-06/child-sex-abuse-royal-commission:-data-reveals-catholic-abuse/8243890) that has revealed that an estimated 7% of all catholic clergy were directly involved in the long term sexual abuse of children between 1950 and 2009 with 90% of them being boys with an average age of 11 with some dioceses having up to 15% of their members being accused of abuse. 

The Brothers of St John of God had 40% of it's members accused of abuse!

Out of curiosity, does anyone have statistics on how likely clergy are to commit various crimes compared to members of the general population?

I suspect the rates of things like crimes against children are quite a bit higher among clergy than the public at large, but we should be rigorous and make sure this isn't just the background rate that these crimes are committed at by all groups.

Lets do the math on this, I'm actually interested.

So according to [this](http://arkofhopeforchildren.org/child-abuse/child-abuse-statistics-info), 40 million children are abused globally each year. 7 billion divided by 40 million is 175, so about 1/175 people, on average, across the human species, abuse a child each year. I guess maybe some people abuse multiple children? But for now go with 1/175, seems reasonable. Maybe 1/200 or 1/300 would be more accurate if people tend to abuse multiple children.

Now according to [this](https://www.statista.com/statistics/245551/number-of-ordained-clergy-serving-us-religious-parishes-by-church/) there are about 340000 ordained clergy in the united states as of 2009. Assuming that 21 over six weeks is a rough average, then we multiply that by 8.66(for 52 weeks) to get 182 per year.

340k/182=1868.13, or 1/1868.
